OVERVIEW OF STA DIVISION SPRING MEETINGS

SOUTH CAROLINA DIVISION

The South Carolina Division met at the Spartanburg Community College in Spartanburg, South Carolina on the morning of Thursday, April 9, 2009. There were eighty-eight participants in attendance. Mark Stubley, Attorney At Law with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. gave a presentation titled “Union Organizers Re-Energized and Their New Tactics and Tools”.

Pam Benedict and Ken Rada of Duke Energy gave a presentation on updates and opportunities pertaining to energy. Mary Lou Drake of Drake & Associates presented a presentation on the massive changes in legislated HR requirements. Dr. Darrell Parker, Dean, Johnson College of Business and Economics, USC Upstate gave a current economic update.

There was an OEM Roundtable discussion on cooperation, collaboration and surviving & thriving together in very tough market conditions. The panel was made up of the following representatives: Steve Brown, GTP; Gary Hunziker, ITEMA; Bill Sherrill, Oerlikon; and Andre Frederic, Rieter.

Following the program lunch was served and was catered by Hickory Hills Barbeque.


NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION

On Wednesday, April 15, 2009 the North Carolina/Virginia Division and the Piedmont Division joined together and hosted their spring meeting at the Gaston College East Campus, Textile Technology Center in Belmont, North Carolina. The meeting was attended by eighty-seven participants.

The following presentations were given: “Redefining Protectionism – Free and Fair Trade For American Manufacturing”, Pat McFadden, Director of Governmental Affairs, Nucor Steel; “Laminating Technologies – Break Thru A Paradigm” Mike Dudai, Lamination Specialist, ITW-Dynatec; “Federal Carbon Legislation – Carolina Impact”, Ken Rada, Region Director, Duke Energy Carolinas; “Trade In The Obamb Era”, Mike Hubbard, Vice President, NCTO; “2009 Economic Overview”, Mark Vitner, Managing Director and Senior Economist, Wachovia Corporation; and “Employee Free Choice Is Your Business”, Terry Childers, Regional Manager, Western Carolina Industries.
